Inspired by the aristocratic tradition of Sommerfrische, when Habsburg emperors and nobility retreated to Austria’s mountain spas during the hot summer months. Bad Gastein ⸺ crowning its legacy as the “Monte Carlo of the Alps” ⸺ became a sought-after destination for regal wellness stays from the 19th century onward, hosting emperors like Franz Joseph I and his beloved Sisi, as well as Wilhelm I of Germany, who frequented the town and its famed hotels such as Hotel Badeschloss or Villa Solitude.
